JASON POLAN | EVERY PERSON IN NEW YORK

Jason Polan, a guy I met at the NY Art Book Fair last year, has an amazing project called "Every person in New York". As the title suggests his goal is to draw a portrait of everybody in New York City. Through this project he has drawn the likes of Richard Prince, Patti Smith, Stephen Baldwin and Beck (and that's just in the last month)but it's his little glimpses into the lives of ordinary people that make this project really fascinating. Visit his project blog below for more info:

RICHARD TAYLOR AND ROSS HAMILTON FREW | IPSO FACTO

ipso facto

new works by Richard Taylor and Ross Hamilton Frew
Superclub, 11a Gayfield Square, Edinburgh, EH1 3NT
29 October - 18 November 2011
Preview 28 October 2011 7 - 9pm

Discussion led by Andrew Bryant (editor of blogging platform Artists talking) 10 November 5-7pm

Superclub Studios and & Gallery, Edinburgh present Ipso Facto, an exhibition of new works by Richard Taylor and Ross Hamilton Frew that brings together eight months of correspondences on the subject of collaborative practice through drawing.

"Through a shared interest in one another's practice, Taylor and Frew have observed, read and learned from each other, and by establishing a blog in early 2011 they have not only mapped out their progress but have also given an insight into their artistic process. This process will be explored further in a discussion led by Andrew Bryant from the blogging platform Artists talking in mid-November.

Exhibiting for the first time together, Taylor and Frew both use drawing as a process to initiate and drive ideas. Richard creates pencilled imaginations and realises them through installation, film work and
performance, and Ross's work, embedded in the act of making marks, deals with the physicality of the page and the parameters set by each surface he works upon. Through a carefully selected body of work both artists will allow the other's practice to bleed in to that of their own, creating a single body from two separate practices."

SUPERCLUB | FEATURED IN THE GUARDIAN EDINBURGH GUIDE

The nice folks at the guardian and Rosamund West have included us in their top 10 Edinburgh contemporary galleries alongside the likes of Embassy, Collective, Ingleby and The Fruitmarket. Here's what they had to say:

"At the top of Leith Walk on Gayfield Square, Superclub is one of three galleries which have recently sprung up in the old doggerfisher gallery. It nestles between Whitespace (a gallery which offers both art and occasional Zumba classes) and Framed, a recent addition to the commercial gallery scene. Superclub is a studio-cum-gallery-cum-shop, set up by a collective of recent graduates as a place to work, exhibit and (hopefully) sell. Out front is the pristine gallery space recently occupied by Alex Gibbs’s tranquil paintings, while at the back is a rough-and-ready installation space used for video projections, launch nights and the occasional gig."

ARTUR ŻMIJEWSKI | THE APPLIED SOCIAL ARTS

The 2007 essay The Applied Social Arts by Artur Żmijewski is available to read online at the link below. As curator of the 7th Berlin Biennale Żmijewski takes his essay as a starting point for his exploration of the political and social conciousness of contemporary art. For anyone intending to visit Berlin for the Biennale next year this is worthwhile reading as an introduction to his thinking and the ideas that will support and clarify the exhibitions he is making. Also of interest is his open call  for artists to participate in a research investigation focussing on whether artists consider themselves political. Again the link for this is below.

BEAGLES AND RAMSAY | GLASGOW PROJECT ROOM

Beagles (who taught most of us Superclub people at ECA at some point) and Ramsay have an exhibition in Glasgow at the moment. I've not made it through to have a look yet but the trailer already has me interested. Their show runs until the 15th at Glasgow Independent Studio's Project Room which is located at Trongate 103. They are also showing as part of Ugly Clean Up at the Embassy this week (see below).

UGLY CLEAN UP | THE LAST MAN

This Friday the Embassy are opening two shows, one at the gallery and an offsite project at the Outhouse just over the road. Ugly Clean Up at the gallery includes Superclub resident Liam Richardson along with some other exciting folks and The Last Man at The Outhouse is a project by Michael White which is bound to be pretty interesting. Don't miss them!

JIM DRAIN

Having recently started working at Edinburgh based tapestry studio and exhibition space Dovecot I've been looking at contemporary artists whose work incorporates weaving and textiles in some way. The first artist I've been looking at is Jim Drain who I'd come across as a member of the noise band/art collective Forcefield with Matt Brinkman, Leif Goldberg and Ara Peterson. His knitted sculptures, wall pieces and garments combine the pixellated icons and bright colours of obsolete computer and video media with the delicate intricacies of weaving and knitting.

His knitted sweatshirts, available through Opening Ceremony NYC, are particularly lurid and with touches of early digital and rave culture references. If anyone has a spare $700 it's definitely worth picking one up!

ROSS FRASER MCLEAN - PATRIA-O-MUERTE

Our nearby neighbours Such and Such are putting on the exhibition Patria-O-Muerte by Dundee based artist Ross Fraser McLean who works with both digital and analogue photography.

"Patria-O-Muerte (literally translated as 'Homeland or Death') is a collection of images taken during McLean's month long travels around Cuba, to mark the 50th year anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. McLean states that he, like the revolutionaries of half a century before, is inspired by 19th century Cuban freedom fighter Jose Marti. His lens manages to capture the uneasy alliance between communism and capitalism and the impact this has on the landscape and on its inhabitants."

There is a preview evening on Friday 14 October from 7-9pm and an afterparty at The Village on North Fort Street from 10pm featuring
DJs including Francis Dosoo (Soulsville@Bongo Club) Skint Richie and Stacey Hunter.
The exhibition runs - Saturday 15 - Sunday 23 October (11am - 6pm weekends and 12am-5pm weekdays)

Such and Such studio - 105 Brunswick Street, Leith, Edinburgh, EH7 5HR.

GOOD PRESS - THE FAMILY SHOW

Our friends over at Museums Press are opening a shop/gallery called Good Press in Mono, Glasgow this week. It looks like it'll be a great exhibition with works by some outstanding artists and illustrators and all the proceeds go towards funding a permanent, dedicated space for Good Press to call home. Don't miss it!
